Bar and Bat Mitzvah dresses for mom, for the service and the party

Your child’s big day has two moments, the service and the celebration. A stylist will help you find the look for each, or one dress that does both. We dress mothers and grandmothers of the Bar and Bat Mitzvah, sizes 0 to 24, petite and plus, with alterations available.

Two moments, one day to get right

A Bar or Bat Mitzvah asks a lot of one outfit. In the morning you’re in the sanctuary, where most synagogues ask for covered shoulders and a hemline at the knee or below. By evening you’re hosting a party, greeting every guest, and dancing the hora. And you’ll be in the photos for both.

Our personalized service and years of experience are completely free.

That’s the crucial reason to come in. At Crystal Boutique in Arlington, in the heart of the DC metro, you work with one stylist who knows how these days run. Your stylist can find you one dress with a jacket or wrap that takes you from the service to the party, or two looks if you’d like a change for the evening, and will pull pieces before you arrive. There’s never a charge for any of it.

We dress the mothers and grandmothers of the Bar and Bat Mitzvah in sizes 0 to 24, petite and plus, with in-house alterations so the fit is right. Women come to us from across Northern Virginia, Maryland, and DC, from Arlington and Alexandria to McLean, Bethesda, and Chevy Chase.

The service and the celebration

Most families plan around two parts of the day. Here’s how we help you dress for each.

Morning

The service

Covered shoulders and a hem at the knee or longer are the norm in most sanctuaries. Think sleeves, a midi length, or a dress with a matching jacket, in a rich color that looks beautiful on the bimah and in every photo.

Evening

The celebration

The evening is yours to enjoy. A gown, a cocktail dress, or the same dress with the jacket off and different jewelry. Something you can greet guests in, sit through dinner in, and dance in.

One dress or two?

Plenty of mothers wear one beautiful dress all day and simply change the layer. Others love a second look for the party. Your stylist will help you decide what suits your day, your schedule, and your budget.

Made to fit you

The right dress depends as much on fit as on style, and your gown is constructed specifically for you.

That’s why an hour in our fitting room beats a week of browsing.

Petite

Proportion is everything at 5’4″ and under. Our stylists and designers know exactly what works for a petite frame.

Plus, to size 24

Because our designers construct the gown for you, every gown here is available in your size. A real selection, never an afterthought.

Altered to you

The fit is everything. Our in-house alterations make sure the dress you take home is cut to you for an exquisite finish.

Questions mothers of the Bar and Bat Mitzvah ask us

What should the mother of the Bar or Bat Mitzvah wear?

Most mothers choose something elegant and a little dressier than the guests, in a rich color like sapphire, emerald, burgundy, or navy. For the service, plan on covered shoulders and a hem at the knee or below. For an evening party, you can go more formal. Skip white and very pale shades so the spotlight stays on your child.

Can I wear a sleeveless dress?

For the party, yes. Most synagogues ask for covered shoulders during the service, so pair a sleeveless dress with a jacket, bolero, or wrap in the morning and take it off for the celebration. Your stylist can find the layer to match.

What fabrics hold up through a long day?

Silk crepe, ponte knit, and wool crepe drape well, hold their shape through hours of sitting, standing, and dancing, and photograph beautifully.

How formal should I go?

It depends on the day. A morning service followed by a luncheon usually calls for cocktail or semi formal. An evening party with dinner and dancing can go all the way to a gown. When in doubt, go a little more formal. You’re the host.

Do you dress grandmothers too?

Yes, and often. Grandmothers of the Bar and Bat Mitzvah come to us for the same reasons: covered, comfortable, and beautiful in the photos. Sizes 0 to 24, petite and plus, with alterations in house.

Where are you, and is there parking?

We’re at 2231 Crystal Drive, Suite 300, in Arlington, on the third floor above the Starbucks, in the same building as Ruth’s Chris Steak House. Reagan National Airport is one minute away, so we’re an easy stop. Monday through Saturday, 10am to 5pm. See directions and parking →
