Read the Invitation: The Dress Code Matters

In Washington, gala and black tie invitations set the tone for the evening. Guests dress with care, and the cameras are out all night. Your gown should feel as good as it looks, through the receiving line, dinner, the speeches, and the dancing.

Our Personalized Service and Decades of Experience Are Always Complimentary.

At Crystal Boutique in Arlington, Virginia, in the heart of the Washington, DC metro, you’ll work one-on-one with a stylist who knows how to dress for galas, embassy dinners, formal weddings, and charity balls.

Black tie or black tie optional?

The two dress codes you’ll see most on a DC invitation, and what each one asks of you.

Floor length

Black tie

Black tie means a floor-length evening gown. A sleek column, a dramatic mermaid, or a full ball gown are all correct. This is your night to make a statement.

Your choice

Black tie optional

You have room to choose. A floor-length gown, a cocktail or tea-length dress, or a statement jacket over something simple all work. Rich fabrics, good color, and the right fit do the rest.

Gown or ball gown?

A gala calls for a full length dress, and a ball gown is one of the best ways to wear it. If a ball gown is your look, see our ball gowns in regular, petite, and plus sizes.

Questions women ask us about galas and black tie

What Should I Wear to a Black-Tie Gala?

A floor-length evening gown. Any silhouette works, so choose the one that suits you, in a rich fabric and a color you love. Your stylist will help you find a gown that flatters you and feels like you.

What Does Black Tie Optional Mean for Women?

Black tie optional gives you some flexibility. A floor-length gown is always appropriate, and so are cocktail and tea-length dresses, evening suits, and statement jackets. Your Crystal Boutique stylist will help you choose the right look for the occasion.

What Colors Work Best for a Gala?

The best color is the one that flatters you and makes you feel great. Tell your Crystal Boutique stylist your favorite shades, or let them suggest colors that light up your complexion. Go bold or keep it understated. Unless the invitation specifies a color, wear the color you LOVE!

Can I wear the same gown to more than one gala?

Absolutely! Change the jewelry, shoes, or cover up, and the dress that looks fabulous on you will still look fabulous.

How Far in Advance Should I Start Shopping for a Dress?

Give yourself time. Start your search at least 4 months before your event to allow for the best selection, designer orders, special colors, and alterations. Planning ahead keeps it relaxed and gets you a dress that’s just right.

Where are you, and is there parking?

We’re at 2231 Crystal Drive, Suite 300, in Arlington, on the third floor above the Starbucks, in the same building as Ruth’s Chris Steak House. Reagan National Airport is one minute away, so we’re an easy stop. Monday through Saturday, 10am to 5pm. See directions and parking →
